The Romanian Women’s Lobby (RoWL) is an umbrella association representing the national co-ordination for the European Women’s Lobby at Romanian national level, and includes Romanian NGO’s dedicated to support women in all aspects of life.

RoWL was established in 2007 in order to promote real and effective equality between women and men in all spheres of public and private life, throughout Romania and Europe.

Its main objective is to foster a friendly environment for gender equality in Romania.

RoWL works to establish equality goals for Romania, advance EU policies that aim to strengthen Women’s Human rights and Equality between women and men, and bring new women’s voices into the public debate on gender equality.

In the first elections of 2007 we had 12 Romanian women MEPs out of 35 Romanian MEPs in the European Parliament.
In the elections of 2009 we had 12 Romanian women MEPs out of 33 Romanian MEPs in the European Parliament.

National Level

Ministers

The data in the below table are not relevant for the real situation. In Romania, as a result of many political crisis followed by new cabinets and reforms, there are differences in both the number of women and senior ministers. By example, between 2004 and 2008 we had either not any woman in the cabinet or up to four women, while the number of senior ministers varied from 15 to 18; between 2008 and 2012 we had the same representation of women in the cabinet, but the number of senior ministers varied from 11 to 20.

Currently there are 55 women MPs in the Lower house out of 412 MPs, and 13 women MPs in the Upper house out of 175 MPs.
